au revoir 2011

2011 has been a pretty great year for me.

Some time in February, I decided to step out of my comfort zone (of being a couch potato) and signed up for the search for the SG Redbull Rookie..

...which led to a series of flights across the little red dot to the capital of the neighbouring country (I have never travelled across the straits that many times before in my life, combined)...

...where I met and made many new friends who widened my narrow and innocent view of the world, and taught me some very valuable lessons in life.

As luck would have it, I won the search *gasp* *insert victory sign*

...which led to more media and radio interviews (also, I realised that I really can't pose like the girls on ANTM -_-).

super dazed me at the Bugis roadshow

top 10

top 10 @ SIC

top 6

top 2

the teammates (:

the people who made s1k smooth sailing :D

Since I was already doing zany stuff, I might as well plunge into another one, so I tried my luck at the CLEO Star search in September...

...and I was the 1st runner-up (:

That's a whole lot of media stuff for an ordinary person like me haha. Never would have thought I'd end up in magazines :P

My future children would think I'm a cool mom, heh.

So anyways, the climax of my Redbull Rookie stint came on 3rd December 2011, at the Sepang 1000km Endurance Race.

Up until 2nd Dec, which was the qualifying day, I honestly wasn't feeling anxious nor scared. I felt like I was just going through the motions, until it was my turn to clock a qualifying timing.

The heavy down pour wrecked my nerves, ruined my frontal vision and I drove with the intention of just bringing the car back in one piece. Prior to this, I've never driven in such a heavy rain, not even in Singapore.

The race then stopped and restarted 30 mins later, so I went out again with hopes of clocking a better timing.

That's when things went haywire and I spun out a few times, causing me to not even finish a proper lap before I was called back to pit ):

Thinking back now, I could have spun in the wrong direction and end up crashing into the concrete barrier, which is NOT GOOD AT ALL ))):

In the end, I was scared and looked terribly scared on the 3rd. My qualifying time caused the team to be placed at a not-so-good grid position. I was feeling sooooo apologetic ):

But, my brother came and encouraged me to move on. With his encouragement (plus a few others'), I trudged on and managed to clock a personal best :D

I was rather apprehensive during the last drive because I really could not see a couple of turns and had to trust my gut all the way. It was my first time driving in SIC at night as well :\

But I brought the car past the chequered flag, and that feeling was simply amazingggg :D Everyone started waving their hand on the track and I was starting to feel really sad that this could very well be my last time on the track ):

joyous moment captured ^_^

Although we did not end up on the podium, it was a great finish for me. My priority was, afterall, to finish the race and finish it with the car intact (:

And so, I really have to thank Redbull SG for giving me the opportunity to step into the world of racing.

Without them, I'd probably be stuck with playing with Daytona the rest of my life and never experience what real racing would be like :P

THANK YOU!!!

I hope I get to be a Rookie again *crosses fingers* hahahaha

In 2011, I finally attended my first peer wedding - my longest pal, Cheryl's.

They always thought I'd be the first to get hitched haha.

I wish them both a happy, blissful and blessed marriage (: *MUACKS*

2011 also marks the end of a couple of relationships, stupidity, gullibility, and the beginning of a fresh new start.

If the world does not end in 2012, I think it would most definitely be another awesome year.

Happy New Year, my friends (:

메리 크리스마스

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

I'm back to continue uploading the rest of my July Korea trip :D

Yeah, it's very much lagged and I'm not remembering much about the exact locations already :P

Ah, heck.

19th: The last day at Jeju was spent at one of the waterfalls near our hostel.

Jeju is seriously so beautiful that there shouldn't be any doubt it'd be one of the new 7 wonders of nature (:

Hope to go back there again soon!

As it was Silin's, Chit's and Lee Peng's last night in Korea, we decided to pop by a spectacle shop to make cool geeky glasses that all Koreans seem to love to wear. Made friends with the shop people as well and got a tiny discount from the owner :D

We also went to a 노래방 and sang our hearts out to the likes of 2NE1, Wonder Girls, SNSD, Beast, Big Bang, 2PM, etc etc.

20th: We searched high and low for the 1st shop of Coffee Prince but alas, it was closed for renovation or something. So we made do with the other branch nearby and had brunch there.

21st: Shin Hui and I met up with Yun Kyung, who used to work in our lab before my time, at Insadong. She's the ultimate host (:

Thank you so much for your kind hospitality, Dr Kim!

Our first time wearing a Hanbok :D at a neoprint shop.

22nd: Went to N Seoul Tower with our new friends, Hui Nam and Hideaki.

We walked around Myeongdong doing last minute shopping...

...and we got to wear hanbok again, at the Seoul Visitor Centre this time (:

We also made some traditional gifts thingy:

Later that night, we met up with Paul, who brought us for a nice soondae dinner and dessert, which unfortunately had glass in it ):

Some of the cutest and loveliest people we met over in Korea: Jihoon the Jimbum, Maren and Karina from Norway.

I miss you guys!!! T.T

With Christmas gone, it means the new year is around the corner = one year older *gasp*

Hope I can squeeze out one proper entry before 2012 arrives haha

오랜만이야

It's been a while.

Blogging regularly just isn't my cup of tea kkkk.

Since I'm on MC today, I might as well blog a little about what has happened in the past couple of months...

JUNE

June 27th marked the end and beginning of my Red Bull Rookie journey.

- We had a photoshoot at Super GP Caffee, the only motorsport themed restaurant in South East Asia;

- Advanced Defence Driving lesson with AADA the next day;

- and the final drive between the Singaporeans, and between the Bruneians on Sepang track.

Prior to the final drive, many thoughts ran through my mind.

Some good, some bad, some depressing.

Driving on a wet track did not help make it any easier ㅠ.ㅠ

But it woke me up.

After the race restarted because of the wet track (it was deemed too dangerous for us novices), I told myself to just treat the drive as a normal one, with no thoughts of competition or whatsoever; panicking would not help at all.

And I guess that did it; it was the best and smoothest drive I had on the track. Granted, I have not had many drives on the track (2 times actually), but it was still, in my opinion, my best drive thus far. Winning did not matter to me anymore because I know I've done my best and I was glad.

In the end, as some of you may have already noticed (or not), I was announced as the Singapore winner, and subsequently, Ogy became my Bruneian teammate.

Yep, I was in shock for a long while after the announcement. It was more like a mixture of disbelief and happiness but I think my face could not express that mixture of feelings well :P

Group photo!

And I super love this picture of us:

JULY

Travelled to the land of kimchi with my JC besties (Silin and Chiteng), Lee Peng and ex-colleague Shin Hui.

It was a long awaited holiday!!! WOOHOO!!!

My only holiday this year ㅠ.ㅠ

14th: We flew via AirAsia; hence we had to transit at KL for a couple for a hours. Maggie Mee was our dinner!

15th: Went to 남이섬. Nope, it's not any special effect. It really was that misty. Super dreamy place to be :P

남이섬 is a location for the filming of the oh-so-popular Kdrama Winter Sonata...

Our first BBQ!!! We were absolutely famished :D but the pork wasn't as awesome as the chicken ):

Poor Lee Peng tried to cover her Yon-sama's eyes...

16th: Random walking/shopping around

Wanted to go to a 노래방 but we had to wait for 30mins ): We were due for an early flight the next morning~

17th: 제주특별자치도, or 제주도 for short. We rented a car over there to make travelling easier (:

Our apartment at 블루 펄 resort:

Drove to the Teddy Bear Museum where you can see literally millions of bears!

I just had to take pictures of the popular 궁 bears :D

천제연폭포

All of us were 서장금 for a while :P

Went back to the resort to have BBQ black pork for dinner

18th: Woke up really early to drive down to 성산 일출봉 to catch the sunrise.

Chit and I ran up the mountain in under 15mins :D

Next up was the All In House. I didn't take much pictures though, because I was busy sleeping while sitting on a stone slab :P

At the Trick Art Museum, we tried our best to show the 'realness' of the paintings...

We were unfortunately beheaded ㅠ.ㅠ

And we attempted to do some planking...

만장굴 Lava-tube cave: Really wet, really cold 1km walk to the end of the cave, and then back to the entrance.

용두암

A bunch of 아주마 were selling fresh seafood and the girls decided to try. It was jaw-dropping seeing those 아주마 sliced the sea cucumbers, oysters and sea-urchins at lightning speed that I took a video of them at work :P

That's all for now.

I have wayyyy too many photos hahaha :P

TO BE CONTINUED!

The above might seem gibberish to most (except the OT part), but my colleagues will understand straightaway.

The past couple of months have been _____ (fill in the blank).

I can't really describe it because there are just too many descriptions/feelings...

Be optimistic, I tell myself, something good will come out of this.

Let's hope it does...

On a happier note, there's a few things to look forward to:

1. June trainings at Sepang

I honestly can't wait to crash and burn (okay, I'm kidding; I don't want to die yet), drive my frustration out on the track. Driving is one thing I know momoren can't do. Hurhurhur.

2. July Korea trip

I have not really taken a vacation ever since work commenced. Plus, I have been looking forward to this trip ever since my first day of work (during which the ticket was bought as well). I might even get to drive around Jeju-do! Woohoo!

3. Army Half Marathon 2011

Ever since my last run (= Standard Chartered Marathon), I have been a lazy bum, always procrastinating about running and blaming the ever unpredictable weather as well. I have finally signed up for my very first run this year so as to swear off my bumming days. Running today, albeit being just a short distance of 6-7 km, felt really good :D :D :D Maybe I will become more energized-looking at work soon..

I have also started photo/image blogging on tumblr.

It's an easier way to blog some daily feelings (:

Especially when I have only a few minutes of break at times ):

Till I blog again!

Red Bull Rookies Search: 17th-20th March @ OBM, Lumut

It has been 3 weeks since the camp ended, but I will still blog a little about it in case I ever forget (I've already forgotten some bits!!)...

17th March, Thursday

Days prior to departure, I worried over whether I'd packed enough clothes, sunscreen, insect repellent, blahblahblah to last me through the camp.

The last time I went for such a camp was back in JC1, for YLTC.

And since we were to take Air Asia without any check-in luggage, I was also worried about overpacking = excess weight.

In the end, I gave up and decided to just heck it.

If need be, I'll just rewear my icky clothes haha.

The day went like this:

- Met the girls at 0745 at T1; Jimmy took a video of us prior to departure

- Boarded the plane and sat next to a super tired Melissa (poor girl; she just finished night shift)

- Reached LCCT at around 1000

- Took a cab to Redbull office (luckily we did not sit in the front passenger seat; it was too dangerous! *see picture below*)

- Demonstrated our 'artistic' talent and had lunch at the office

- Waited for the Msians and Bruneians to arrive and off we go to OBM

- Our passport, IDs, wallets/money, mobile phones, iPad/iPod and cigarettes were confiscated ): We were expected to fully immerse ourselves in nature..

- Played a couple of ice breakers

- Collected our bedsheets and pillow covers (thank our lucky stars that we had a proper dorm!)

- zzzZZZZzzz

During the next couple of days, I did not bring my camera along as the days were packed with activities..

18th March, Friday

- Morning jog around the area outside OBM

- More ice breakers after breakfast

- Designed, carried the materials and built our own raft to be paddled across 1-2km (total chaos ensued with tons of shouting and screaming)

- Twin kayaking after lunch (super tiring, absolutely hated the compulsory capsize lesson, but fun nonetheless)

- Night walk in the forest, with only the moonlight as our guide

19th March, Saturday

- Played Captain's ball

- Due to unexpected change in weather, we did indoor rock climbing and abseiling

- Reflections with the instructors

- Group performance rehearsal + preparation for BBQ night

- BBQ night!!!

*Mark, please do not come to Singapore to murder me...*

20th March, Sunday

Alas, it was time for farewell...

Yep, we went crazy on the grass...

Presentation of OBM collar pins..

Closing ceremony + presentation of certificate..

What I've gained from the camp:

- many blisters;

- many bruises;

- a whack on the forehead by a tree branch in the forest;

- surprisingly zero mosquito bites;

- hidden talents;

- new found respect; and

- enhanced friendships (:

No matter what the end result is, I still love all of you girls! :D

Rock climbing soon ya??

Red Bull Rookies Search: 4th-6th March @ KL

4th March, Friday

Went to work as usual, with the exception of lugging a travel bag along.

I was somewhat distracted the entire day, forgetting to bring or do things here and there.

Maybe I was subconsciously excited? lol

Met Melissa at Vivo for a quick dinner before going to Key Point, but seeing we might be late, we took a cab during peak hour and even paid for ERP, though the driver tried to save us some money by wanting to go the longer way.

The most surprising thing happened when Lee Chin decided to join us for the cab ride by alighting a bus she just boarded, and looking for our taxi in the traffic. Because she was carrying a backpack, it looked like a scene from the Amazing Race when she ran to our cab :P

In the end, we were one of the first girls to reach, and at 1845h sharp, we were off on a coach to KL via Second Link.

In order for us to get to know each other better, we had to do a short introduction, including some interesting facts about ourselves.

I was able to remember some facts because the girls seem to have a more interesting life than mine, hoho.

As the journey dragged on, most of us fell asleep, and by the time we reached the hotel (Holiday Villa Subang), it was 0115h.

We were scheduled to wake up and be ready for breakfast by 0700h -_-

zzzz

When we entered our room, we saw that RedBull Malaysia left us a gift bag + half a dozen of Msia's RedBull (:

5th March, Saturday

Had to drag myself out from underneath the oh-so-warm blanket, and both of us ran to the bathroom to seek some warmth. The hotel's air-con could freeze people to death! lol

Although we were sleepy, all of us were excited about attending the defensive driving course.

Before the start of the course, we realised there were boys in the room!

Wait a minute. Isn't this a FEMALE driver search???

Turns out RedBull decided to form a new RB21 team - for guys and girls under the age of 21 - and they were the selected 6 out of 1000+ participants.

So cool can!!

After a round of brief introduction by all of us - Msians, Bruneians and Sporeans - it was blatantly clear that most of us Sporeans don't have the luxury of owning a car... TT.TT

Makes me wana move to Brunei hurhur :P

So what is Defensive Driving?

One might think it's to literally defend oneself on the road, and perhaps one is right.

The correct meaning is to drive proactively in order to prevent accidents that might be caused by adverse driving conditions or by the incorrect actions of other drivers.

The course started out like a refresher course to me. I learnt once again the proper sitting position and the steering position aka Pull Push Steering.

I am willing to bet many of us don't execute Pull Push Steering, always crossing our arms during a turn.

It's a bad habit that I need to unlearn lol.

We were shown actual pictures and videos of accidents. Some were rather gruesome. I vividly remember one in which a motorcyclist was first knocked down by a long lorry travelling fast behind and subsequently rolled over 3-4 times by the lorry ):

Please drive carefully everyone. Always be aware of your surroundings!

During break, some of us rushed to take a photo with the senior Rookie Carmen Lim (:

I think she's really cool *gushes like a fangirl*

Later on in the afternoon, we went to Shah Alam Stadium where the actual defensive driving would take place.

There, we learnt how to:

- maneuver the car around cones, Slalom style;

- carry out emergency braking in cars with and without ABS (Antilock Braking System). The latter is called cadence braking and both were conducted on oily surface, courtesy of Kenvin's (the Chief Instructor) enthusiastic oil pouring;

- do skid control, which most of us found really fun :P

I am terribly sad that I did not take any pic/video of the extremely cool defensive driving techniques ):

The only photos I have from the course are these:

Bwaahhh ):

For dinner, we went to Shogun Restaurant at Sunway Pyramid.

I felt really sua-ku when I saw Sunway Lagoon beside the mall. Shows how little I know about Msia tourist attraction :P

As a after-dinner activity, some of us went ice-skating.

It's my first time!! :D

Ziyi and Felicia are both pro inline skaters, so ice-skating is like nothing to them. They glided like ice princesses~

Even though I know how to skate, ice-skating was a whole new experience to me. There were so many grooves on the ice that I panicked and stumbled here and there lol.

Thanks to the girls, I managed to improve a little ㅋㅋㅋ

6th March, Sunday

IT'S THE BIG DAY!!

Upon reaching Sepang, we were split up into groups of 3 to 4 and each of us took turn in sitting in the group leader's car for 3 laps - introductory, actual and back to pit.

After which we were supposed to be evaluated by the instructors through driving the same 3 laps :S

NERVE-WRECKING TO THE MAX!!

I kept recollecting all the videos/footages of car flips I've ever seen on tv haha.

Evaluation was, in one word, interesting. After all, it was my first time :P

I came out of the car looking like I've lost my soul lol

One thing's for sure; sitting as a passenger is totally different from sitting as a driver.

I was trying like crazy not to forget all I've learnt...

As with all competition, it was time for another round of selection announcement.

2 Bruneians, 1 Msian boy and girl were selected first.

Then came our turn :S

When I heard my name, I really got a shock.

I went on the trip with the intention of enjoying myself and trying my best without even thinking that I might be selected.

So yah, it was a pleasant surprise (:

To all the SG rookies, it has been a tremendously exhilarating experience with you girls.

Initially, it was difficult to know all of you during Top 24; but coming together as Top 10, I've found new talented and passionate friends (:

I hope we WILL meet up again (FILTER does not count :P)

February 22, 2011

Go Kart!

Over the weekend, I was selected as a Top 24 for the Red Bull Female Driver Search.

How awesome is that?? (:

What made it even more awesome was that we were to Go-Kart at Kartright Speedway, which has a rate of $32/$38 per 10 mins! And I got to do it twice! :D

Totally 赚到了 lol.

Too bad I didn't take any pictures today ):

I hope Red Bull Singapore Facebook page will upload some pictures soon.

I made a couple of new friends. Coincidentally, they are both of the same age and ride a bike too :P

Some of the girls were truly amazing.

Makes me re-think about the female racing scene in Singapore which, in my opinion, was like non-existent till a few days ago.

Good job, Red Bull!

Now everyone will know FEMALE POWER!! *roar*

Being selected again as a Top 10, I was speechless for a while.

Think some of the cameras caught my shocked look :S

I didn't expect to be chosen due to my lousy skills during the second round.

Spun the kart like nobody's business -_-" and came in at 9th place.

Maybe the big guy up there wants me to have some experience? :D

So, guess I gotta read up on racing/cars/drivers info soon.

100% ignorant noob here lol.

Sepang International Circuit, here I come!! ^.^

새해 복 많이 받으세요~

IT'S THE YEAR OF THE RABBIT!!

A Happy Lunar New Year from all the rabbits (save one who ran away to Japan to become a snow rabbit) in my family (:

Although this year's celebration has been a minor one compared to previous years', it is always good to have the entire family's company (:

Here's a really unique radish(?) that my godma beautified:

(It's 100% natural!!)

안영 2010.. 안영 2011

In 2010, I (in no particular order)..

- graduated from NTU SPMS CBC

- won a trip to Hokkaido via Bioessence's BB cream facebook contest

- went to Korea and Bangkok for graduation trip

- joined A*star's SBIC LBPD

- became one of the 365 ambassadors for FreshLook Illuminate

Along the years of growing up, I've learnt many things, as with everyone else.

In 2010, the lesson struck me the hardest, was hypocrisy.

Thanks to someone, I now know what hypocrisy and 笑面虎 really mean.

Also, because of someone, I now know how much my friends care and how much they mean to me.

In 2011, I will be a more mature person and handle whatever that may come my way with maturity.

I will not cry.

December 06, 2010

SCMS 2010

So I finally did it this year..

..and I completed it!! (:

Albeit being seriously slow (a mixture of run + mostly walk), I still pride myself for finishing a grueling 42.195km :D

GOOD JOB, EMMY!

Now I'll have to nurse my legs (forgive me, legs) back to health, and suffer through horrible sunburns on my neck and shoulders..

Ouch.

But I will not give up.

I will continue to train for the next marathon, be it Sundown or SCMS 2011.

And I will be more prepared next time.

ROAR~!!
